January 2012 Meeting Minutes

Attendees: Pam, Kris H., Lucille, Mary G., Rosemary, Mary C., Carrie, Janet, Teresa, Georgianne, Tim and Becky T., Sue A., and Linnea. If I missed anyone, please excuse me.

Pam called the meeting to order at 6:35 PM.

The minutes from the November meeting, which are on the blog, were approved by a unanimous vote.

Treasurer's report shows that as of the end of 2011, we have $2332.64. Report was approved by unanimous vote.

Old Business:

Holiday in the Park was beautiful. Hope you all had the opportunity to view and enjoy it. Pam and Mary G. pulled it apart and are storing the items.

Kris H. is the Plant Sale Chair- she informed us that we will now be able to hold the annual plant sale at TDawgs on Hwy. 70 in their parking lot. This should work out well for us, since there will be lots of good parking spaces and a restroom and restaurant close by. Kris H. will look for someone to help with advertising.

It was discussed that members should continue to check out the blog and pay attention to the the advertising on the side and check out the interesting and informative links, for gardeners, that Pam puts on there. Contact Pam for information on how to submit information for the blog.

The 2012 booklets are printed (Thank you very much to Kris for printing them, they are beautiful) and available at the meeting tonight. Please check the listing and put a check mark by your name, if you picked up your booklet at the meeting.

We discussed the Garden Expo at Madison Feb. 10 - 12th. So far, we have six members going, they are Linnea, Janet, Kris H., Georgianne, Becky T., and Sue A. We still have room for 2 more people to go with. We need a $50 deposit tonight from those who want to go. We will leave on at 8 AM on Friday, Feb 10, and come back on Sunday, Feb 12. Please look at the previous letter from Pam Davies which explains about the Expo and you may sign up for your own workshops. Georgianne and Kris will each drive.

New Business:

A lady who has a cabin locally, contacted the Club to let us know that she needs someone to care for her garden at her cabin, since she lives in the Twin Cities and does not have much time to spend at the cabin. She is willing to pay for these services. A garden club member could decide to do this to make money, or the Club, as a group, may decide to take on this project to make money for the Club. This can be discussed further at the next meeting.

Lucille Danielson brought in her photo albums full of photos of the previous 20 years of the Garden Club. Thanks to Lucille. It is fun to look through them.

Kris Henning showed us her wonderful power point presentation "20 Years of Growing"! What a terrific look back over the 20 years of the club! Thank you very much, Kris, for all the hard work you put in to making that wonderful program!

Our guest speaker was Nicki Peterson, of Crosstown Creative Solutions. She explained to us what she can do for businesses to promote their products and boost sales for them. She can help build web sites and help people with their advertising needs. Nicki is also the President of the Grantsburg Chamber of Commerce. She explained to us that the Chamber would like more non-profits to become members. The Chamber helps businesses to advance, they help with tourism and many community events. Nicki was instrumental in starting the Grantoberfest Festival. The cost for a non-profit, such as our Garden Club, to join the Chamber of Commerce is only $50.00 per year.

Summary of our Brainstorming Session

Brainstorming session 1/12/2012

The club devoted some time to looking at our statement of purpose and what we want for the future of our club. We broke up into small groups and discussed some questions, brainstorming ideas.

We looked closely at the four points of our mission

to stimulate the knowledge and love of indoor and outdoor gardening,
to encourage civic planting and beautification,
to help people of all ages learn the satisfaction of gardening and other horticultural pursuits,
and to enjoy the gardens and friendships while sharing knowledge among our members.

Some thought that we do the forth and first items very well but might do more to encourage civic planting and to reach out to the community.

Discussions in both groups:

We thought that joining the Chamber of Commerce would help us with outreach (ads in the Chamber newsletter and networking). Also, word of mouth from members could help us promote meetings and events. We could also use Community Education to promote garden tours such as Arboretum, Munsinger Gardens, etc.

We could partner with the Chamber to encouraging civic planting and beautification: put together a planting day event for the businesses in Grantsburg. The Chamber would provide plants and we would help businesses get their planters planted coordinating with the hanging plant pots. The businesses would be responsible for watering and weeding.

Issues around encouraging member to serve as officers came down to time constraints. Offering premiums for members who serve was not thought to be very useful.

Some thought we should not offer a Master Gardener Scholarship program. Others thought that offering a Master Gardener Scholarship was a good idea but we need first to work on our ability to set up a budget so that we know what funds will be available for a scholarship. Partial scholarship rather than a full scholarship was thought to be a better idea—somewhere between $25.00 and $75.00 (cost last year for the course was $150.00. Details of how the scholarship would work would have to be worked out.

If we want to sponsor more programs such as the scholarship and additional advertising of meetings and speakers we may need to raise more money. Ideas for raising more money: silent auction as a Chamber event, weeding for hire (difficult when we have our own gardens to weed), plant sale gift certificates sold before the sale date, make crafts such as stepping stones, twig trellises, rhubarb leaf birdbaths. We could do a workshop day to make times to sell. Club supplies materials, members supply labor. Sell them at plant sale, through booths at fairs such as Experience North Woods Christmas in Siren or Chamber events. We could sell food items.

The question remains, are we satisfied with our club as it is or do we want to do more? If there is more we want to do, we will need to commit to the time and energy it will take to do more. For now we could do two things that will not involve a lot of additional time or effort for most members:

1. $50.00 to join the Chamber is easily accomplished. We can join for one year to see if we like it.

2. The first year we could advertise our monthly meetings and sales in the newsletter and participate in some Chamber events as they come up. Not a lot of extra time or energy needed. Needs a vote.

3. We can ask Mary to work up a budget for the year 2012 with normally expected expenditures and revenue and decide if we’d like to devote a few hundred dollars to a trial scholarship/grant program for members who want to take the Master Gardener course through Wisconsin Extension. Details need to be worked out but we’d want to vote on this.

Meeting Reminder, Thursday, January 12, 6:30 PM

The Burnett Garden Club will meet on Thursday, January 12th at 6:30 PM at Grantsburg High School, room 111. We will be sharing the history of the Burnett Garden Club with photo albums compiled by our historian, Lucille Danielson, and a PowerPoint presentation created by Kris Henning. We will discuss what our club means to us and ways to improve our club and attract new members in the coming year. Refreshments provided by Pam and Mary G.

Don't forget, we now give away a DOOR PRIZE at every meeting!!

Local enterpreneur (Crosstown Creative Solution) and Grantburg Chamber of Commerce President, Nicki Peterson, will be our special guest. Nicki will talk to us briefly about how Chamber membership can help our organization. Nicki will also be available to talk to members about her business (online marketing, social media, website design services, graphic design and printing). Members who have their own small businesses may find Nicki a great resource in the community.

Our 2012 Bulletins will be distributed at this meeting.

Holiday Potluck a great success!!

A wonderful time was had by all at the annual Holiday Potluck. We had a terrific turnout, loads of wonderful food and goodies, and a rousing round of the dice game to divvy up all the gifts! Teresa's warm and wonderful home was a feast for the eyes! Photos of the event will be posted here when received as well as recipes any members wish to share.

Burnett Garden Club

November 2011, meeting minutes

Attendees: Pam, Kris H, Mary G, Janet, Becky, Tim, Ruth, Lucille, Teresa, Georgianne, Nori, Sue, Cindy, Carrie, Linnea, Jacqui D, Jacki B (if I missed anyone, please let me know).

Pam called the meeting to order.

Treasurers report was given by Becky. We have a total of $2000.00 + currently in the account. Report was approved by unanimous vote.

The October 2011 meeting having been canceled, meeting minutes for the September 2011 meeting, posted on the blog, were approved by unanimous vote.

Becky gave a report for the Sign Planting committee. The weeding schedule worked well and the status of the garden now is that annuals have been cleared away and weeding done. The rest can stay until spring.

Pam gave a report of the Holiday in the Park committee. The plan for the display is a garden shed, picket fence etc. Materials needed have mostly been collected. Extension cords are needed and will be supplied by Ruth Andersen. We need artificial trees or tree parts, which some members indicated they may have for our use. Carrie said we could set up beginning November 27. Tim advised us to look out for permanent lighting so our display lights will show better.

Old business was called for.

Mary G. has received a request from a local lady who wants to donate pots to our club to use for the plant sale, but doesn't want to store them over winter. Mary G. has no idea how many or what kinds. If anyone can help, please contact Peggy Johnson directly to arrange to help her. Her number is in the phone book.

Under old business we voted to accept the revisions to the constitution and by-laws that were proposed by the executive committee and that these revisions should be written into the documents and not left as amendments. The revised constitution and bylaws will be posted to the blog.

New business

We are again giving door prizes at each meeting with the VP responsible for providing prizes each month which will be reimbursed from the treasury. The first prize was given at this meeting. Carrie received a small autumn candle arrangement.

Kris presented a February garden club trip to the 2012 Garden Expo in Madison. This is the 19th Annual Garden Expo Feb 10-12 at the Madison Alliant Energy Center. For anyone who wishes to attend, the Garden Club will cover the hotel cost (4 to a room) for Friday and Saturday night. Commitments for the trip will need to be made in December at the Holiday Potluck (December 8) and will necessitate a $50.00 deposit. These deposits will be refunded at the Expo. Two rooms have been reserved but there should be time to reserve more if more wish to attend. For more information, talk to Kris.

Election of officers took place with Pam D as President, Kris as VP, Mary G. as Treasurer and Janet as Secretary. The new officers will arrange a planning meeting to take place prior to the next meeting.

Mary G introduced our presenter, willow weaver, Jacki Bedworth and presented her with an honorarium.

Six Trees Planted Sunday by Club Members

Nori and Jim, Mary C. and Pam met up at Kris's on Sunday to help plant 6 of the seven beautiful memorial trees Kris received. We made quick work of it and only got a little bit wet when the much needed rain came! Coffee and goodies followed. Give Kris a call if you have time next weekend to help with some shrubs and perennials that need to get into the ground before everything freezes up! Kris will be back at work this week and is planning on being with us at the November club meeting.

Thanks for all you do for us, Kris. It was our pleasure to do for you!

October workshop moved to November Meeting, election of officers, payment of dues!!

Jacki Bedworth, local willow grower and weaver, will be giving her willow basket workshop at the November meeting. More than just a demonstration of how to make a willow basket, she will give us hands-on experience by teaching us how to make willow mats. You may watch or participate. To participate, please bring $5.00 for materials for Jacki. Additional kits may be purchased from Jacki for $10.00.

The November meeting is a very busy meeting with dues due for the 2012 season which begins in December. We also elect our new officers. And will put the last touches on our Holiday potluck plans. Jacki would like plenty of time for the workshop and would like to start promptly at 7:30. So lets all be a bit early, if possible, so we can get our business out of the way!!

Officers to be elected: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer.

According to our current by-laws:

The President shall preside over all meetings of the Club and Executive Board and shall perform such duties as regularly pertain to the office. The President shall be ex-officio member of all committees and shall appoint the chairs of all standing committees and special committees as necessary. The President may call special meetings of the Club or Executive Board as the need arises. The President shall not vote at Club meetings unless there is a tie, and shall cast the deciding vote.
The Vice-President shall assist the President in the discharge of his/her duties, and shall perform in the duties of President in the absence of or inability of the President. The Vice-President shall be the Chair of the Publicity Committee and any other special duties as assigned by the President.
The Secretary shall keep all the minutes and attendance of regular and Executive Board meetings... and any other duties as assigned by the preseident and/or Executive commitee. (Some additional duties specified for the Secretary in the by-laws are currently being done by the "Information Officer," which is currently an unofficial position, and by the other officers. ...correspondence with members and other Club affiliates, have charge of the books and papers of the Club, prepare reports for publication and filing to appropriate organizations, attend to the distribution of notices and bulletins.)
The Treasurer shall be the custodian of the funds of the Club and shall pay expenditures approved by the Executive Board. The Treasurer shall make financial reports at every regular meeting, a yearly financial report at the Annual (November) meeting, and be subject to an annual audit in October by the Executive Board. The Treasurer shall receive dues from the members... and keep an up-to-date membership record at all times.

The Executive Board consists of the current officers plus the immediate past President. The current Executive Board is looking at amending the constitution and by-laws. We will try to vote on these changes at the November meeting or by email before the December meeting.

In an effort to expedite the election procedure so that we can take care of business quickly at the November meeting, I offer the following:

Pam is offering to run for President but would welcome anyone else who would like to step forward. Please send Pam your name if you would like to run or would like to nominate someone.
Pam is proposing Mary G or Janet B for VP if either would like to run or anyone else who would like to hold this office (please email Pam with your name or the name of a willing nominee). The VP candidate should be willing to move into the President position in subsequent years.
We need a Secretary who expects to be attending most meetings and can email digital copies of the minutes to Pam for posting on the blog. If you don't know everyone's names, please feel free to ask for people to give names at the start of the meeting. Georgianne? Anyone else?
While the By-laws specify that no officer may hold office for more than two consecutive terms, we will ask that this be waived again and that Becky T. continue on as Treasure unless there is a member who would like to run for this office.

If you would like to be an officer but are afraid you might not be available to attend all meetings, or fully discharge your duties, please stand for office. We will ask for alternates to make themselves available to fill in as needed or a co-officer can be elected. We want to give everyone who wants to be an officer a chance to hold office.

Deepest Sympathy to our President, Kris Henning

I sadly bring to the attention of our club the news that Ralph Henning, Kris Henning's husband, passed away from a heart attack on Friday, October 7, 2011. We are all stunned by the news. Our hearts go out to Kris and her family.

The visitation will be on Wednesday, October 12 from 5 until 8 at Edling Funeral Home on Hwy 70 in Grantsburg. The funeral will be held Thursday at 2PM at Trinity Church in Falun. Our club will provide a memorial arrangement on behalf of the garden club.

Out of respect for our President and because there will be no joy in a meeting in this week of grief for our friend, we will postpone the October 13th meeting with our thanks to Jackie for her understanding. Details to be announced.

September 2011, Meeting Minutes

Ten members attended the September 2011 meeting of the Burnett Garden Club held at Grantsburg High, school, room 111. They were: Linnea, Mary G., Wanda, Becky, Janet, Nori , Cindy K., Pam and new members Raine Lampert and daughter Mikhalla.

Pam called the meeting to order. Introductions were made for the new members. Discussion ensued about member access to post to the blog. Pam will look into options.

Treasurer's report was given by Becky: current balance is 2287.39. Report on the June plant sale: gross revenues were 721.00 and post sale sales of 55.00 giving a total of 776.00. Expenses for soil 103.99, hostas $75.00, lumber for potting area $30.00. A profit of 567.01 was realized.

Signup sheets for 2012 committees, refreshments and program ideas were made available to attendees. The club will need a new chair for the plant sale committee in 2012.

Becky reported on the sign committee. She will decide on a cleanup date for early October or late September. Becky observed that shorter days mean little time in the early evening for this task.

Old Business:

Recap of the summer given by Pam especially how the July 1 storm impacted our summer programs. Last minute cancellation of the community garden tour was very disappointing to gardeners who prepared for the tour. Our regrets and thanks go to these individuals with our hope they will be able and willing to showcase their gardens next year.

New Business:

Dues are being collected for the 2012 calendar year. Call for volunteers for the nominating committee as new officers will be elected in November. Please share your ideas for workshops and presentations for our 2012 program year on the sign up sheets. The agendas and presentations for October (Jacki Bedworth willow weaving workshop--supplies will be $5.00 per person) and November meetings (election of officers and braided wheat ornament workshop) were given.

No other new business.

Our guest speaker for this evening is Kevin Schoessow from the extension office in Spooner. Pam and Becky providing refreshments following the program.

Our Next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 7:00 pm at the Grantsburg High School, room 111. We will have our Annual Club Plant Exchange and will be planning for next year. We will pass around a sign up sheet asking for suggestions for speakers, topics and workshops. So, think about what committees you would like to be on and come with lots of ideas!!

We will also be forming a nominating committee at this meeting. If you would like to serve on the committee or as and officer and need more information, please email me or Kris (see Officers tab for addresses)

Our presenter will be Kevin Schoessow, Extension Agent for Burnett County in Spooner. He will speak on "Tree and Shrub Replanting Choices After Storm Damage." This will also be relevant for any local gardens who want more information on what trees and scrubs are best for our terrain and climate!

Master Gardener Volunteer Training to be Held in Burnett County starting Sept 6

MASTER GARDENER VOLUNTEER TRAINING TO BE HELD

Garden enthusiasts interested in learning more about horticulture and who have an interest in volunteering in their local communities can now sign up for the University of Wisconsin Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Training program. Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm starting September 6 and will continue through Tuesday November 22. Classes will be held at the Burnett County Government Center on Hwy K north of Siren.

The class format will include a combination of on-site live instruction and instruction via live interactive web-based conferencing. Instructors include both University of Wisconsin Specialists, and guest instructors. Classes will meet once a week for thirteen weeks and cover topics on general gardening practices, botany, soils, pest management, entomology, weeds, plant pathology, herbaceous plants, woody plants, lawns and backyard wildlife.

According to Kevin Schoessow, Area Agriculture Development Agent, for Burnett, Washburn and Sawyer Counties, the purpose of this program is to train volunteers to assist with community projects related to horticulture, gardening and nutrition. While participants will get a broad base of knowledge in horticulture, the ultimate purpose of the training is to recruit volunteers. To become certified as UW-Extension Master Gardener Volunteer participants must commit 24 hours of volunteer service per year.

The registration fee for the thirteen sessions will be $120, which covers the cost of the Handbook for Wisconsin Gardeners and the Wisconsin Master Gardener Program Manual, a one-year membership to the North County Master Gardeners Association and speaker costs. If two people share the manual and handbook, cost for the second person to attend the training is $85.

The Spooner Area UW-Extension is sponsoring the Master Gardening Volunteer Training. Class size is limited. Annual Garden Twilight Tour Tuesday August 23

The public is invited to attend the annual twilight garden tour at the Spooner Agriculture Research Station on Tuesday, August 23 from 4:00 pm until dusk.

There will be demonstration and displays on composting, drip irrigation, adaptive gardening, rain barrels, food preservation, raised bed gardening, native pollinators and beekeeping. Tasting of vegetables, fresh salsa, and grilled vegetables will also be offered.

UW-Extension Plant Pathologist Brian Hudelson from UW-Madison and UW-Extension Fruit and Vegetable Specialist Brian Smith from UW-River Falls are invited guests. These specialists along with Kevin Schoessow, Area Ag Development Agent and local UW-Extension Master Gardener Volunteers will be on hand to lead discussions and answer questions on a wide range of horticulture and gardening topics.

There will be an introduction of guests and speakers at 5 pm, followed by short presentations by Dr. Hudelson and Dr. Smith.

Participants can also see the newly installed “off the grid” drip irrigation system and a hoop house.

Schoessow reminds gardeners to be sure to bring your plant and insect questions. “Bring samples in plastic baggies, clearly labeled so that if we need to get back to you with an answer, we have your name and contact information”.

Visitors can see over 350 plant selections in the garden this year, both annual and perennial. Favorites include the cold hardy wine and table grapes, heirloom tomatoes, garlic, and of course the All American Selections Display featuring award winning annual flowers and vegetables from 2006-2011. There is also a landscaped perennial display garden featuring roses, flowering shrubs, ornamental grasses and other flowering perennials.

The demonstration garden is a joint effort between the Spooner Agriculture Research Station, UW-Extension and North Country Master Gardeners Association. The garden is free and open to the public August through September for self guided tours. Guided tours are available M-F 8am-4:30 pm.

There is no cost to attend this event, however participants are asked to bring a non perishable food item, to support local food shelves.

Upcoming events in the garden include the fall harvest garden walk on Tuesday Sept 27, the putting the garden to bed garden walk on Tuesday Oct 25, and a fall table grape pruning workshop on Saturday Nov 5.

The garden is located ~1/2 mile north of Hwy 70 on Orchard Lane, across from the Sheep Research Facilities at the Spooner Ag Research Station. The research station is located ~ 1 mile east of Spooner on Hwy 70. Watch for garden meeting signs.

I could like to invite the membership to submit their favorite recipes for posting here on our Burnett Garden Club Blog. Food has always been a part of our meetings with refreshments provided by members at each meeting and two annual potlucks. We have had some dynamite food at meetings and potlucks over the years.

I have been posting recipes here on our blog for a while now (scroll down and look for "recipes from club members" on the right column) and will post any and all recipes I receive. At some point we should have enough recipes for a Burnett Garden Club Cook Book! So everyone, send in your recipes, especially those that utilize produce you've grown in your own gardens!!

September Meeting Change and Potluck Reminder

The presentation for our September 8th meeting has been changed as Donna of Village Floral will be unavailable to talk about Planning for Fall/Winter Garden Interest.

Kevin Schoessow, Extension Agent for Burnett County in Spooner, will be presenting "Tree & Shrub Replanting Choices After Storm Damage." He will be speaking on decisions to make when choosing replacement trees and shrubs and going through the process of getting the best trees for your situation. This will be a great topic considering the considerable damage to some of our member's gardens. He will have a PowerPoint slideshow and a short video on proper planting techniques.

We will have the plant exchange following the presentation. Hope you can all make it.

Don't forget the Summer Potluck and Container/bouquet Contest 5:30 at Alma Karel's cabin on

Summer Potluck, Thursday, August 11, 5:30 pm

We will be having our annual summer potluck at a new location this year.

Alma and Cynthia have invited us to the Karel cabin on Spirit Lake!!

We will have our usual container garden competition and, new last year, the best vase of cut flowers competition. (1 prize-cut flowers, 2 prizes for container gardens. You can enter both categories!)

Bring your entries and a dish to share. Meat and buns as well as a beverage will be provided by the club.

A few updates on member activity

A number of members have had damage from the storm. Linea is scrambling to move hostas to shadier spots in the yard since losing a number of large trees. Stop by her place to see what plants she has to give away, there just isn't room for all of them.

Don't forget Kris's Spirit Lake Lilies open house and plant sale on July 30.

Mary G and I made a trip over to Janet's and availed ourselves of her generous offer of two free plants. There are still lots of plants. Stop by Thursday evening 5:30 to dusk.

Mary C had big losses. Stop by her place, if you can, or drop her an email to let her know you are thinking of her.

Stop by my place if you want to check out the progress I am making on putting things back to some order. Looks a bit like a moonscape around here these days.

If you are working hard to get your place back in order and would like a friendly face and some moral support, let me know and I will send out an email. It really does help to commiserate!

The Grantsburg sign is looking good. The mulch is making weeding pretty easy. Give yourself time to enjoy the lovely garden when your week comes up. If you need help let me know and I will send out an appeal to members.

Be sure to keep in touch this summer. Missing the garden tour has been a big hole in our calendar. I miss seeing everyone. Hope everyone will be able to make the Aug 11 Summer Potluck. The venue may be changing so watch for emails.

Grantsburg cleaning up from Friday's storm

It is with great sorrow that this summer's Community Garden Tour is being cancelled due to the July 1 storms. Tour chair, Janet Byers, put a lot of time into planning the tour this year but at least one of the member's gardens slated for the tour has sustained significant damage. Other members have damage as well and will undoubtedly be busy with cleanup.

The Burnett Medical Center garden has survived unscatherd. If anyone is disappointed about the tour cancellation, they can visit the hospital garden anytime.

Please let us know if you have damage from the storm and would like help with the cleanup. I will post requests on the blog. Anyone available to help can call these members: Pam, Becky, Linnea, Linnea’s mom Shirley, or Teresa. Numbers can be found in the 2011 bulletin.

Wanda's garden tour--great fun!

Seven of us met at 2Eskies Garden Store in Rush City. A small store but with some really fun stuff. We all bought plenty!
Loading up the van was a little tricky.
The Grant House in Rush city, less than two blocks away, was a great place for refreshments. The raspberry cream cake was a real hit. Thursday's special two dollar burgers were home made! We all agreed we'd be back.Wanda's house, a few miles out of town on lush, winding roads, is situated on 15 beautiful acres that feature a small pond and a terrific bonfire pit.

Lovely little gardens are situated all about the property.

Wanda has been working hard edging and mulching beds.

We posed for a photo, Kristie serving as photographer, then went to have a quick look at the livestock--chicks and ducklings!

Thanks for organizing a terrific evening for us, Wanda! And thanks Kris for documenting the event!

Zucchini Parmesan served with Couscous

Pam’s Zucchini Parmesan with couscous

1-1.5 hours prep time

Serves 4 – 6 people as main course

Simmer in medium saucepan for 30-45 minutes:

4-5 med to large tomatoes diced (fresh tomatoes are wonderful but you can use canned)

1 reg can of tomato sauce (home made is great)

small can mushrooms or equivalent sautéed fresh mushrooms drained

¼ cup dry red wine

1 tsp Worchester sauce

2 tsp brown sugar

salt and pepper

½ tsp chili powder

¼ tsp nutmeg

¼ - ½ tsp cayenne pepper

Sauté in olive oil in a skillet

½ cup green onion chopped (or as much as you like)

1-2 tbsp garlic chopped (or as much as you like)

1 tbsp oregano and other Italian spices (as you like)

Remove from pan and add to tomato mixture. Then, in a little more oil, sauté lightly

1½ to 2 thinly sliced medium sized zucchini

Lay out the lightly sauteed zuchinni in a rectangular pan (8.5 x 13 inch) overlapping

Pour the tomato mixture over the zucchini

Sprinkle with 1/3 cup of breadcrumbs

Sprinkle over this 1/3-cup of Parmesan cheese

Over this sprinkle about 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes at 325 –350 degrees. Remove foil for the last 10 minutes. Let stand for five minutes while you prepare couscous.

Prepare couscous (1 part couscous to 2 parts liquid, I make 1 cup cousous in 2 cups liquid) in water, a little olive oil and chicken flavoring (bullion or chicken stock) Combine water and chicken flavoring, salt and oil in a saucepan, over medium heat and bring to a boil. Turn down heat and stir in couscous. Cover and turn off heat. Let stand thus for 5 minutes.

Serve couscous topped with the Zucchini Parmesan. Enjoy!!

Tour of Wanda's garden, Thursday, June 23

We are all set up for June 23^rd for the Rush City tour. Unfortunately we will not be visiting Melon Vine Farm as the owner is going in for eye surgery, but Wanda has arranged for us to go to 2 Eskies Green House in Rush City instead.

Our schedule is :

5:30 PM at Grantsburg High School, if you wish to carpool to Rush City

6:00 PM meet Wanda at 2 Eskies Greenhouse (right on 61 in town—they close at 7:00 PM))

7:00 PM go to Grant House for dessert (they close at 8:00 PM)

We will tour Wanda’s garden after dessert.

Sounds like a fun time!! Hope to see you all there!

June is here and our garden club calendar starts out with a flurry of activity:

June 2, 2011 5:30 pm at the Grantsburg sign on Hwy 70, Annual Sign Planting. Bring gloves and shovels and any other cultivating tools you like. We will clean out the beds and plant annuals along the boarder. Refreshments to follow.

June 4, 2011 6:30 am Saturday in front of the Espresso Cabin. This is our Annual Plant Sale (8 am to noon). Rain or shine. Dress for the weather. We will be setting up, selling and tearing down. We need members to help set up and sell but if you can't get there that early, come when you can. This is a fun event and members usually go home with a lot of plants for their own gardens!!

June 16, 2011 Garden jaunt to Rush City to see Wanda Bjorn's garden as well as another private garden (possibly). We will also make a stop at Melon Vine Farm. Dessert at Grant House in Rush City (if you haven't been to the Grant House, this will be a treat!) 5:30 pm carpool from the High School.

Meeting Minutes

May, 2011

Ten members were present at the May 12, 2011 meeting of the Burnett Garden Club held at room 111, Grantsburg High School. They were: Kris H., Wanda, Pam, Georgianna, Gaye, Kelly, Lucille, Mary G, Linnea and Rick .

Kris called the meeting to order and read the minutes from the April 14, 2011, meeting. No corrections to the minutes were offered. The minutes were approved with a unanimous vote, after a motion by Linnea, seconded by Wanda. April 2011 minutes have been posted to the blog.

The Treasurer’s report was not made as the Treasurer was absent. Last month’s balance was $1909.38. Kris had funds from early sales of plants at the plant-potting event last week. She will hold those funds until the sale.

Old Business:

The weeding calendar for the Grantsburg sign was handed out so each member would have a copy.
Our Community Garden Tour still needs a 4th garden preferably in the Grantsburg area. Alma’s gardens may be a possibility if we do not get any other offers.
The potting party held ad Kris’s last week was a great success with over 350 perennials and 37 shrubs potted up for the sale. 13 shrubs/trees from last year survived. Any plants brought in for the sale should be nicely potted and labeled.
Tables are needed for the sale. Kris has 2 8-foot tables, Wanda will bring 1, Mary C will bring 2, Georgianna will bring 1. Linnea and Rick will bring saw horses if we need them for more tables. Kris will be providing a large and a small canopy for shelter.
Kris handed out Plant Sale flyers to be posted by members and will send a digital file to Pam to send out to the full membership to post where appropriate.
We need boxes and flats for the sale.
Bring lawn chairs to the sale
Linea to bring sign
Becky will have the cash box and seed money
6:30 AM setup.
Our Circle nursery tour, while a fun idea, has been cancelled due to lack of member participants.
Dahlia bulbs came in along with Begonia bulbs. These were handed out. There are some still available.

New Business:

Funky Garden’s North of Marine on St. Croix sent our club a $10.00 off coupon. I anyone would like it, contact Kris. They have also offered our club a tour.
Grantsburg Sign Planting will be June 2 at 5:30.
There are a number of events this summer throughout the area. Check the printed booklet or the blog calendar for these events.

No other business. Meeting was adjourned with a unanimous vote after a motion by Wanda, seconded by Gaye.

Wow, with this cold weather it is hard to think of getting out there and digging up those clumps that need separating but Thursday is our potting party at Kris's. We need to get those excess plants potted up for the plant sale next month. Don't forget any extra seedlings you may have. Kris will give plenty of TLC to these plants and by June they will be dazzling for our sale.

Burnett County Garden Club Meeting

Meeting called to order by Kris Henning.

Secretary notes read by Kris Henning, with only one correction. Refreshments were served by Kris Henning and Ruth Andersen at our last meeting.

Minutes approved by Wanda Biorn and Cindy Kollar.

Treasurer report read by Becky Tessman. We have $1909.38 in our garden account.

Old business:

Kris brought begonias to share with Club members as a result of her presentation last month “Spring into Color”
Kris also brought a sign out sheet for those who would rather have Dahlia’s when she receives them.
We will save the re-vamping of the By-laws until this fall sometime.
We have 3 gardens signed up so far for the Local Garden Tours, if you know anyone else who would be interested please call Janet Byers. The Tour is scheduled for July 14.
Becky passed around the volunteer sign up sheet for weeding at the Village sign garden We will be cleaning up that garden on April 27^th weather permitting at 5:30pm. Please bring rakes, gloves, pruners and buckets.
Discussion was held regarding the Circle Garden Tour on May 22^nd which tentatively would include North Branch, St Croix Falls and or the Sunshine Nursery.

New business:

We will meet at Kris Henning’s home to pot up our plants for the garden sale on May 5^th. Linnea bought Hostas at the garden seminar in Minong which need to be repotted. If anyone else has anything to be potted please bring them to Kris’s on that night. We are also in need of gallon and quart pots. Kris is in need of a new table for repotting plants and the garden club approves the funds for Kris’s husband to build one.
Our plant sale id on June 4^th. We are in need of canopies and tables. If you are selling your plants be sure they are labeled, it would also be nice if you have pictures available of the plant. We will be placing flyers of the sale around town and placing an ad in the Big Gust day garage sale flyer.
Just a reminder regarding the Greenhouse tour at the Wood River Nursery. Dean will be gracious to take us on tour on the new and old favorite plants on sale this year. We will meet there at 10:00am on Saturday.
Next month meeting will include Mushroom Basics.

Our Presentation tonight is “Overview of Beekeeping” by Jonathan Maslow and Tim Tessman. This was a wonderful and informative program regarding beekeeping. This was a great opportunity to learn more about our local pollinators we rely on for our flowers and crops and to learn from such gifted and well learned educators.

We closed the meeting with refreshments served by Jeanette and Cindy.

Burnett County Garden Club Meeting

Meeting called to order by Kris Henning.

Minutes of the February meeting approved, (moved and seconded by Janet B. and Pam D).

Treasurer reported we have $1953.16 in our account at this time.

There were 15 members present.

Old business:

We discussed the garden seminars which are going on this month;

Isanti MG seminar was March 5, Janet ,Theresa and myself attended .

Chisago MG seminar is on March 12.

Northwoods seminar is on March 19.

And Pine count y MG seminar is on March 26.

These are always wonderful and informative seminars to attend.

Becky passed around a volunteer sign-up sheet for weeding at the Village sign.

If you can think of anyone who would be interested in showing off their garden this year for the Garden tour please let Kris or Janet Byers know.

Kris will be having a sale of her Lilies on August 6th, which will be open to the Garden Club.

New business:

We have received a notice from Burnett County regarding their tree, shrub and prairie flower sale. If anyone is interested in this you can contact the Burnett County office.

We discussed the plant sale in June, if you have plants to sell you may bring your clumps to Kris

Henning’s home and they will be separated and potted up for the sale.

If there is an interest in doing a circle nursery tour, please share ideas and we will discuss it at our next meeting.

Wood River Nursery has graciously invited the Garden Club Members to preview their new selections for this spring. The date is April 16th around 9:30 or 10:00. We are asking for volunteers to bring refreshments and treats.

Janet Byers will have some of her Asiatic lilies for sale at the next meeting.

Kris Henning gave a wonderful power point presentation on “Spring into Color.” Kris also had a very informative handout to coincide with the presentation.

Straw Bale Gardening is simply a different type of container gardening. The main difference is that the container is the straw bale itself and is held together with two or three strings. Once the straw inside the bale begins to decay the straw becomes "conditioned" compost that creates an extroardinary plant rooting environment. Getting the straw bales conditioned is an essential part of the process, and should be started by the first week in May for most parts of the country. This gardening technique works anywhere in the country or the world for that matter....

February 10, 2011 Meeting

Kristie Henning called the meeting to order at 7pm. We had 9 members present.

Kristie read the minutes of the January meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

Becky Tessman gave the Treasurer's report. We have $1,988.16 in our account.

We discussed the upcoming garden seminars for March. They are:

"Burst Into Spring" seminar on March 5 at North Isanti Baptist Church by Cambridge.

The Chisago County garden seminar in Center City is on March 12.

The "New Ventures" garden seminar in Minong is on March 19.

The Pine County garden seminar in Pine City is on March 26.

Old Business discussed:

Becky Tessman passed around a sign up sheet for volunteers to weed and water this summer at the

Welcome to Grantsburg sign on Hwy. 70.

New Business discussed:

There was some discussion about organizing a Circle Nursery Tour the weekend of May 21 or May 28.

Some options are to go to Homestead Perennials in North Branch, Kent's Perennials in St. Croix Falls and/or

Sunshine Gardens by Cushing on the way to St. Croix Falls. Please email Kristie Henning if you are interested.

There was a brief discussion about the annual Plant Sale at Espresso Cabin on June 4th. Set up at 6:30 am.

We discussed the June 16th "Garden Jaunt" to see Wanda Biorn's new place by Rush City, possibly visiting

a private garden along the way and Melon Vine Farm and to have dessert at the Grant House in Rush City.

We would meet at the Grantsburg High School to car pool and leave Grantsburg at 5:30 pm.

We discussed the Community Garden Tour on July 14th. The first stop would be at the Burnett Medical

Center and CCC gardens, then to Georgianne Kleiss home (Georgianne has since declined) then to finish

up and have refreshments at the home of Teresa Halls. Janet will be contacting a couple of other gardeners

to see if they would be willing to be on the tour to fill in for the second garden.

We also discussed the Spirit Lake Daylilies Open House on July 30th at Kris Henning's home.There will

be a Potluck and Container/Bouquet Contest at Seume's cabin on August 11th at 5:30 pm.

There was some discussion about planning an over night trip for next year. Possibly going to Madison

in the Spring or early Summer?? We can discuss that further at a later date.

There was a motion to adjourn the meeting.

Mary Griesbach introduced our Guest Speaker- Chet Anderson. Chet had a fabulous slide show presentation

on "Wildflowers of the West". Chet presented slides featuring his hiking/camping travels on the Arizona Trail

from March 27, 2010 to May 18, 2010 and the Colorado Trail from July 9, 2010 to August 2, 2010. On the

Arizona Trail he encountered lots of cactus, of course, also beautiful California poppies, rattlesnake weed,

many varieties of beautiful un-identified flowering desert plants, as well as golf ball pin cushion plants, barrel

cactus, compass cactus, mariposa lilies, yuccas, Juniper trees, prickly pear cactus in bloom, and more. He

also encountered rattlesnakes, gila monsters, elk, deer, California condors, turkey vultures, and lizards. He

was also able to visit the Grand Canyon during this hike.

On the Colorado Trail, Chet saw lots of amazing and beautiful scenery as well as mule deer, beaver ponds in

the valleys, Cooper's hawks, mountain goats and gorgeous flowers such as rosy paint brush, penstemon,

blue columbine, Alpine lousewort and much, much more.

Chet was a very good and very interesting speaker. He has many more hiking adventures planned for the future.

Burnett Garden Club Meeting Minutes

Meeting was called to order by Kris Henning.

Secretary notes from November are on the blog for anyone to read.

Treasury report was given by Becky Tessman. We have $1958.19 in the club account as of this meeting.

Old business:

We do need a tours chairperson, who will stay in contact with persons generous enough to volunteer their gardens for tours and also the other summer tours that have been scheduled.

Janet Byers has agreed to be our new Tours Chairperson.

On June 16^th our club with be touring Wanda and Jack Biorn,s new gardens located in rush City, MN. We tentatively be stopping to view a private garden and maybe Melon Vine farms. We will carpool from the High school at 5:30 PM.

Our community Garden Tour is set for July 14^th.

New business:

Becky Tessman passed around a signup sheet for help in weeding the garden at the Grantsburg sign.

Kris Henning talked about the Circle Nursery Tours scheduled for May 21 or 28^th. Kris also brought in seed catalogs to view and magazines from the Horticulture Society of MN. If anyone is interested in a membership to the Hort. Society it comes free with a subscription to the Northern Gardener Magazine and you’ll need to talk to Becky Tessman regarding that.

The club welcomed new members.

We watched a video brought in by Wanda Biorn on “Square Foot Gardening” by Mel Bartholomew. This is a very interesting video for people with a small area for gardening. If you are interested please see Wanda as she will lend out the video.

Tim and Becky Tessman show a wonderful PowerPoint presentation on their garden travels including the Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island, the Munsinger Gardens in St.Cloud, MN, Key West and many more gardens. They also provided a very informative handout on the gardens they have seen.

Meeting was adjourned and seconded.

Burnett Garden Club

Constitution

1. NAME. The name of this organization shall be the Burnett Garden Club.

2. PURPOSE. The purpose of this Club shall be to stimulate the knowledge and love of indoor and outdoor gardening, to encourage civic planting and beautification, to help people of all ages learn the satisfaction of gardening and other horticultural pursuits, and to enjoy the gardens and friendships while sharing knowledge among our members.

3. AFFILIATION. The Burnett Garden Club shall be affiliated with the Minnesota State Horticultural Society and shall cooperate with this organization and its activities, and are able to send delegates to attend district meetings.

4. MEMBERSHIP.

Membership in this Club shall be open to any person interested in the purpose for which this Club was formed, who has a willingness to work for and support that purpose, and who is willing to pay the annual dues.

5. OFFICERS. The officers of this organization shall be the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Information Officer.

6. EXECUTIVE BOARD.

Section 1. The Executive Board shall consist of the elected officers, the chairmen of the Standing Committees, and the immediate Past President.

Section 2. The Executive Board shall have general management of this organization. They shall approve the plans and reports of the various committees, and any expenditures incurred by same. They shall present a summary of any Board meetings at regular meetings.

Section 3. The Executive Board shall meet regularly in order to best conduct the business of the Club. The first Board meeting after election of officers shall be a joint meeting of the incoming and outgoing Boards at the organizational meeting prior to the December meeting.

Section 4. A quorum for the Executive Board shall be three Board members.

7. MEETINGS.

Section 1. The regular meetings of the Club shall be held on the second Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM in the Grantsburg High School, Room 111 unless otherwise noted.

Section 2. The Annual Meeting of the Club shall be the November meeting.

Section 3. Special meetings may be called at any time by the President with approval from the Executive Board.

Section 4. Executive Board meetings shall be held not less than semiannually at a time to be determined by that Board.

8. AMENDMENTS.

Section 1. This Constitution may be amended at any regular meeting providing that all members have been informed of the proposed amendment and its purpose 30 days in advance of the meeting.

Section 2. A quorum of 1/3 of the current membership must be present, either at the meeting or in the form of a proxy vote, to vote on an amendment. A majority of 2/3 is needed to pass an amendment.

By Laws

1. OFFICERS.

Section 1-Election and Terms.

A. Any member in good standing and active in the Club shall be eligible to hold office.

B. Voting shall be by ballot whenever there is more than one nomination for an office.

C. The officers shall be elected at the annual meeting and shall serve a term of one year.

D. Installation of new officers shall be at the December meeting. They shall formally assume the duties of their office upon installation. Outgoing officers shall turn over to their successors all records and materials belonging to that office.

E. No officer may serve more than two terms consecutively in the same. An officer may be re-elected for a later term if there has been a one-year interim. This may be waived with a simple majority vote.

F. Vacancies in any office shall be filled by appointment of the President with Executive Board approval.

G. An officer may be the chairman of no more than one Standing Committee and one Special Committee if desired.

H. If necessary, when co-presidents serve, no Vice-President will be elected. Co-presidents shall assume the responsibilities of the Vice-President.

I. Each officer shall maintain records and conduct correspondence as it pertains to their duties for the club and will copy other officers and members as appropriate.

Section 2-Duties.

A. President. The President shall preside over all meeting of the Club and Executive Board, and shall perform such duties as regularly pertain to the office. The President shall be ex-officio member of all committees and shall appoint the chairmen of all Standing Committees and Special Committees as necessary. The President my call special meetings of the Club or Executive Board as the need arises. The President shall not vote at Club meetings unless there is a tie, and then shall cast the deciding vote.

B. Vice-President. The Vice-President shall assist the President in the discharge of his/her duties, and shall perform the duties of President in the absence or inability of the latter. The Vice-President’s duties shall include publicity for the club and any other special duties as assigned by the President.

C. Secretary. The secretary shall keep all the minutes and attendance of regular and Executive Board meetings, prepare the minutes and other reports to be published by the Information Officer. The Secretary shall perform any other duties as assigned by the President and/or Executive Board.

D. Treasurer. The Treasurer shall be the custodian of the funds of the Club and shall pay expenditures approved by the Executive Board or a simple majority at a regular meeting. Treasurer shall make financial report at every regular meeting, a yearly financial report at the Annual meeting, and be subject to an annual audit in October by the Executive Board. The Treasurer shall receive dues from the members, be in charge of filing membership reports to MSHS, and keep an up-to-date membership record at all times.

E. Information Officer. The Information Officer shall maintain a website for the Club for the purpose of publishing Club notices and meeting minutes and other information pertinent to the Club. The Club website will be accessible to the public and will serve the additional purpose of community outreach.

2. Dues.

Section 1. The annual dues shall be set by the Executive Board at the October meeting for the coming year.

Section 2. The annual dues are due and payable no later than November 15th.

3. Members.

Section 1. Members who have paid their dues for the current year shall be considered in good standing and entitled to vote.

Section 2. New members may join at any time during the year and will be required to pay the full annual Club dues. They will be considered full-fledged members with benefits and voting rights.

4. Committees.

Section 1. Chairmen for all committees shall be appointed by the President. For ongoing direction, they shall report to the President. They shall choose committee members to assist them in performing the functions of the committee. Standing Committee Chairmen shall be appointed annually after the November meeting, and Special Committee Chairmen as needed.

Section 2. The Standing Committees shall be:

 Plant Sale-Organize and execute the annual June plant sale

 Sign Planting-Organize and execute the annual spring Grantsburg sign planting

 Holiday in the Park-Organize and execute the annual Memory Park holiday display for the Club

 Yearbook-typing-Publishing and distribution by the January meeting.

Special Committees shall be created and appointed as needed.

Section 3. The Historian shall be considered a designated position in the Club, not as an elected officer, but as a volunteer member.

Section 4. All committee chairmen shall give a complete report of their committee’s activities for the past year at the annual meeting, with additional suggestions for the coming year.

Section 5. Any member appointed to a committee or asked to perform duties for the Club shall act on such committee or perform such duty unless, for any cause, such member is unable to do so, and in that event, such member shall provide a replacement and so inform the President or Committee Chairman.

Section 6. Any correspondence of a specific committee shall be handled by that committee.

Section 7. The Fair Awards Judging Committee shall consist of the President, Vice-President, and Secretary, and shall judge the entries at both Burnett County Fairs.

5. Meetings.

Section 1. The following Order of Business shall be adhered to at all meetings unless suspended by a majority vote:

Section 2. In addition to Section 1 contents, the Annual meeting shall contain election of new officers, annual Treasurer Report, annual Standing and Special Committee reports, payment of dues, and suggestions for next year’s programs from member’s input.

6. Quorum.

A quorum shall constitute 1/3 of the current membership for the regular transaction of business at a meeting, unless otherwise specified in the Constitution or Bylaws.

7. Parliamentary Procedure. Robert’s Rules of Order shall govern this Club in all points not specified in the Constitution or Bylaws.

8. Amendments.

Section 1. These Bylaws may be amended at any regular meeting providing that all members have been informed of the proposed amendment and its purpose in advance of the meeting.

Linnea's Brussel Sprouts Dish

1 1/2 pounds brussels sprouts (about 25 brussels sprouts)
1 package of cream cheese (8oz)
1/2 cup mayonnaise
3/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
2 full teaspoons of fresh ground black pepper
1 small sweet onion (or any onion), chopped

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

2. Wash brussels sprouts and remove loose outer leaves.Trim thick stem bottom, Cut in half.

3. In bowl, place cream cheese in microwave and heat for bout 30 seconds, or until cream cheese becomes very soft, almost melted. Add mayonnaise, parmesan cheese, ground black pepper and onion. Mix well, making sure everything is combined well.

4. Add brussels sprouts, combine well until brussels sprouts are even coated with cheese mixture.

5. Transfer to baking dish, cover with aluminum foil. Bake covered for about the first 30 minutes. Then remove foil, gently stir to bring bottom brussels sprouts to the top.

6. Bake uncovered for remaining 20-30 minutes, or until brussels sprouts are tender and until the cheese topping becomes a nice charred crust. Poke with a fork till they are cooked to you desired tenderness.

7. Lastly, when serving, don’t forget to scrape the bottom of the dish for the browned, charred cheese! that’s the BEST part.

*** update: Doreen (from comments) used a casserole dish, which was probably deeper and had to cook the brussels sprouts for longer. So if you use a deeper dish, then increase your cooking time. If you use a shallow dish like I did , then the dish cooks quicker. And, probably crispier too with a nice charred crust!

Seven members were present at the November 14, 2010 meeting of the Burnett Garden Club: Kris H., Becky and Tim T., Wanda, Pam, Georgianne and Janet.

A committee sign-up sheet for committees and upcoming events was circulated. $5.00 dues are due for 2011. Without a quorum we could not proceed with the nomination and election of officers. This will be carried over to the December meeting. Minutes from the last meeting have been posted to the blog with the addition of attendees to be appended.

The last meeting was the Grapevine Wreath Making Workshop with Carrie B as presenter. This month is the Ornamental Grasses for Zone 3 presentation by Kris H.

Treasurer’s report (Becky T.): 10/31/10 statement balance $1946.64, as of 11/12/10 $1956.64 (65.00 membership dues minus $35.00 for magazine order and $20.00 for the October speaker supplies.

Becky has ideas and some materials – shepherds hooks with stockings stuffed with greenery, Candy Canes, the Burnett Garden Club sign and spots to illuminate.

Articles and Bylaws were found by Lucille. They can be discussed at the organizational meeting in December. Information for the 2011 booklet must also be finalized so these can go out ASAP.

Minnesota Horticultural Society MSHS offers 10-12 categories of awards (individual and club awards with levels and categories). Wisconsin gardens can qualify. We have missed this year’s deadline for nominations. Next year our club would like to nominate the CCC garden at the Burnett Medical Center.

It was suggested that we include the CCC garden at the BMC in our local garden tour for 2011.

Our next Meeting will be the Annual Holiday Potluck and optional gift exchange which will be held on December 9 at 6:00 pm at Pam Davies' house (on Pine Street north of the post office and the village shop). An email will go out for members to respond indicating what they would like to bring: main dish, side dish, salad, dessert. (The club will cover the expense of paper plates, cups, etc.) $10.00 optional gift exchange.

Ornamental Grasses Presentation by Kris Henning, Wisconsin Master Gardener:

A PowerPoint presentation was displayed on the SmartBoard with copies handed out. (Copies may be available through Kris H). A selection of dried grasses from Kris' gardens was included in the presentation.

Kris gave a thorough overview of which grasses have done well in Zone 3. Check out the U of M website for more reference materials on grasses http://www.extension.umn.edu/. Recommended reading Northern Gardener Magazine, Ornamental Grasses for Cold Climates by M. Meyer U of M professor and grass specialist, and Minnesota Hardy. (Members may subscribe to Northern Gardener Magazine through Becky T.) Both books available on U of M Extension website.

Some grasses mentioned: Fall-Blooming Reedgrass, Karl Foerster, Huron Solstice – switch grass, Northwind -- switchgrass (stands up well through winter), Little Blue Stem (native), Big Blue Stem (native), Purple Molinia Grass – Skyracer, Miscanthus – flame grass.

MEETING MINUTES
Thursday, September 9, 2010

The Burnett Garden Club met at 7 PM Thursday Sept. 9, 2010 at the Grantsburg High School. Present were the following members: Wanda Biorn, Rosemary Burkman, Janet Byers, Mary Griesbach, Gaye Gunderson, Kristie Henning, Cindy Kollars, Linnea Seume, Becky Tessman. Member Cynthia Leonard was our presenter for the evening and she brought her friend Lynn.

Secretary’s Report: May’s report was posted on our website and no other reports were done for the summer field season.

Treasurer’s Report: Becky was accepting dues this evening ($5 for the year or magazine dues will be taken in November).

Old Business: Our brochures were distributed to members with requests to give them out to interested people. We missed the opportunity to have them available for our summer events, but it is still an excellent piece of information about the Club.

New Business: Sign-ups for the upcoming year for refreshments, tours and workshop suggestions and committees were passed around.

Officer nominations were discussed. Kris H. and Mary G. will be unable to serve next term so President and Secretary positions are open.

Mary asked for an updated membership list to be printed and available, since we have had such a nice increase in membership this year since the yearbook was published.

Guest Speaker: Cynthia Leonard (without husband Phil, she apologized for him) gave a fabulous and motivating presentation about growing garlic! She had prepared a delightful powerpoint slide show and we had a lively discussion. Also available tonight were several varieties of garlic bulbs for planting and eating.

We also enjoyed our annual fall plant/seed exchange and everyone went home with something new for their fall gardens.

Yummy refreshments provided by Gaye Gunderson were consumed with enthusiasm.

Our next scheduled meeting is Thursday, October 14 at 7PM for a grapevine wreath make-and-take workshop. A list of materials needed will be forthcoming.

SPECIAL NOTE: these are the last meeting minutes I will be able to provide, as I have taken on new employment that requires my working on Thursday nights. I still hope to contribute to next year’s planning.

We will meet 7:00 pm at the Grantsburg High School, room 111, on Thursday, September 9th, for a PowerPoint presentation by Phil and Cynthia Leonard on growing garlic at home. Mary G will be bringing 5 varieties of garlic for sale from "the garlic guy" who sells at the Alpha farmer's market on Friday afternoons (he couldn't make the meeting). Gaye G and Maryann W will be providing refreshments.

At this meeting we will have our Annual Plant Exchange and nomination of officers for 2011. Also be prepared to offer some program suggestions for 2011 and to sign up for refresments for next year.

We had a lot of fun at the Seume's family cabin for the annual Pot Luck and Container Garden/Cut Flowers Competition event. Thank you to Linnea, Rick and Shirley for hosting this event. Pot Luck and Container Garden Competition, Thursday, August 12

Our annual pot luck is Thursday, August 12 at Linnea's family cabin on North Shore Drive of Big Wood Lake. Arrive around 5:30-6:00. Seume's will have the grill running. Bring a dish to pass and something to grill (for yourself). Linnea will provide burgers, brats and buns as she did last year. The club will pick up the expense as well as for paper and plastic products for this event.

Bring a swimming suit if you want to swim!!

If you want to enter the competition, bring your container garden. First and second monetary prizes will be awarded. No third place this year as we will try something new--best cut flowers in a vase, one monetary prize.

Directions: HWY 70 to County Road Y (west of Alpha), south to North Shore Drive, left, look for cabin with lots of cars.

We will be visiting the Enger Tower gardens, the Duluth Rose Garden, Edelweiss Nursery, and possibly another greenhouse on the way home if there’s time. We will stop somewhere in Duluth for lunch on our own.

Carpool from the Grantsburg High School parking lot at 8 AM, and return sometime late afternoon. If we have more than 5 confirmed, we will need another volunteer to drive a second vehicle. Let Chris know if you can take some in your car if need be.

Lucille's Eclair Dessert

Lucille treated us to her Eclair Dessert at the 2010 Community Garden Tour. Very rich and delicious! Thanks Lucille! Look for links to tried and true member recipes on the left column.

1 cup water
1 stick butter
1 cup flour
4 eggs
1 pkg cream cheese [8oz.]
3 cups cold milk
2 packages instant pudding. [vanilla]

Crust
Bring one cup water to a boil. Remove from heat add 1 stick butter and stir until melted, add eggs one at a time stirring well. Next add the flour and stir until it forms a ball. Pour in 9x13 inch pan. Bake in 400 degree oven about 15 Minutes. Watch very carefully, bake only until light brown. Let cool completely.

Filling
Beat 1 cup milk, 1 pkg cream cheese, add remaining milk slowly with pudding mix . Let this thicken a little and pour on top of crust. Top with whipped cream or whipped topping. Add fresh fruit or sprinkle melted Chocolate on top.

Kim's Pecan Pie Bars

Kim treated us to these wonderful bars at the 2010 Garden Club Community Garden town. They are so yummy!! Thanks Kim. And thanks to Lucille, Janet, Gaye and Wanda for bringing the refreshments for the tour.

Pecan Pie Bars

Pre-heat oven to 350

1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup packed brown sugar ( I used Dark)
1/2 cup light colored corn syrup
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 tsp vanilla

1. For crust, in a medium bowl combine flour, powdered sugar & salt. Using a pastry blender, cut in the 1/2 butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Pat crumb mixture into an ungreased 11 x 7 x 1-1/2 inch baking pan ( I used a 9 x 13)

Bake about 20 minutes or until light brown.

2. Meanwhile, for filling, in a medium bowl stir together eggs,pecans,brown sugar,corn syrup, melted butter and the vanilla. Pour over the baked crust, spreading evenly

3. Bake about 20 minutes more or until the filling is set. Cool in pan.

I lined my pan with foil with the foil extending a couple inches beyond the pan edge for easier removal - also I cut back on the baking time because of the larger pan I used - approx 16 minutes.

The Daylily Society of Minnesota garden tour is this Sunday, July 18. If anyone would like to attend and ride with Kristie, she would love to have company on the drive to meet the bus!

From Kristie:

The tour costs $10 for members, $15 for non-members, and DSM membership only costs $5/year. We travel on a deluxe motorcoach bus, the trip includes lunch and refreshments, and we will be seeing 4 very nice gardens for the day. We are touring the northwest quadrant of the Twin Cities this year in the Buffalo and Monticello area. We will meet the bus in the Wayzata area, and would probably have to leave our area around 6-6:30 AM; the tour probably gets done around 3-3:30 PM, so we would be back before supper.

I personally toured the gardens this spring and they include Gary Schaben (a well-known MN. Hybridizer with lots of interesting seedlings), Darrell Johnson (former Board member and budding hybridizer with a beautiful rock/water garden, vegetables, & apples in a former apple orchard property), and Mick Raeker (budding hybridizer and maniacal gardener of five acres), plus Mick’s neighbor, who has a large water garden, pretty garden beds, and fun ‘antique-filled playhouses’ in her back yard.

Please let me know asap if you’d like to come with me; I will work out the arrangements with you later this week.

I know there was still room on the bus as of last Friday. You will have to email President & Tour Leader Amanda Engstrom at: amandaengstrom@netscape.net to register and find out how she would like you to pay (mail or bring check?).

Our first picture of a completed rhubarb leaf project was sent in by Kimberly McDonald.

She used diluted acrylic paint in numerous coats and a spray-on sealer that seemed to work fine on the concrete.

The annual Community Garden Tour will take place on Thursday, July 15, beginning at 5:30 PM. Our first stop will be Becky and Tim Tessman's gardens. Then we can go to Linnea and Rick Seume’s and Shirley Nelson, Linnea's mom next door. And finally, refreshments will be served at Pam Davies's.

Becky says Tim has a lot of new hostas since we were last there. Shirley Nelson no longer has a woods behind her-- she now has sun gardens. Linnea also now has more sun gardens, so things are different at her place, also.

The threat of rain did not stop the Burnett Garden Club from creating what we hope will be fabulous rhubarb leaf birdbaths and various sizes and shapes of stepping stones and planters. Getting set up at 6 am is always fun. Rosemary's canopy went up without a hitch, no thanks to the mice that ate the directions!! Thanks to the internet, we got the thing set up but Rosemary still can't figure out why there are more extra parts every year!?

Directions: In Grantsburg follow the Crex Meadows goose silhouettes on the street to County Road F. Watch for Mary's planter and trellis on the left side of the road, about 3.5 miles or so.

Bring what you have of the following (if you don't have these things, come anyway!!):

Cement dust is caustic.
gloves (to keep cement dust off your hands)
goggles (to avoid getting cement dust in your eyes)
mask or bandana (breathing in cement dust can be hard on your lungs)

Mold and texture materials depending on the project you have in mind. See How-To links on this website for hyper-tufa -- on the left column (scroll down)

wheel barrow or large bucket (for mixing)
shovel or trowel (for mixing)
plastic garbage bags (for lining your molds for easy release and for wrapping project to cure)

This is our one fundraiser that keeps us in the black for the year.

If you have plants to donate, bring pre-potted and labeled plants early.
Setup will start around 6 am (we have canopies to setup and need lots of hands).
If you can't make it that early, come to help sell later or bring goodies to help sustain us!!

Grantsburg Sign Planting, Thursday June 3 at 5:30

Becky Tessman has been coordinating the Grantsburg sign planting for many years and with the help of Tim Tessman and garden club volunteers has been keeping the gardens watered and weeded throughout the summer. This is a fun time and a great way to get acquainted with some of the club members. Come and join us for the annual planting of the sign on Thursday, June 3 at 5:30 PM or as soon as you can get there!!

Bring gloves, rake, shovel, trowel if you have them. The garden has been cleared (thanks Becky and Tim) but will need turning and weeding before planting.

Thursday, May 13, 2010

The Burnett Garden Club met at 7 PM Thursday May 13, 2010 at the Grantsburg High School. Present were the following members: Sue Auguston, Mary Charmoli, Lucille Danielson, Mary Griesbach, Gaye Gunderson, Theresa Halls, Kristie Henning, Cindy Kollars, Linnea Seume, Becky & Tim Tessman, Jeanette Villarin and Nori! We also welcomed Julie and Tiffany Peterson as well as Carrie Byers as our workshop leader for the evening.

Secretary’s Report: April’s report was posted on our website and was approved with no changes.

Treasurer’s Report: Becky reported our balance as of 4/30/10 was $1240.78.

Old Business: Our pre-sale potting party that was held at Kris Henning’s home on May 6 yielded approximately 64 flats of plants. There will also be plants for the sale coming from members’ homes. Please pick-up a load at Kris’ on Friday evening if you can. We will need lots of help at 6AM to set up the tent and get the plants set out. Sale will begin 8AM on Saturday June 5.

The summer tours will take place Sunday June 13 by meeting at 8AM to carpool from the High School. We will visit Minnetonka Venero Gardens (we have coupons!), Lyndale Park Gardens and Anderson Iris Gardens. Another tour opportunity will be August 7 to Duluth’s Edelweiss Gardens, Tower Park Gardens, and Rose Gardens.

Our own Community Gardens tour will be held July 15 with Janet Byers as chair.

New Business: A reminder from Becky T. that we will be meeting for Grantsburg sign planting on June 3 at 5:30PM. Becky has requested that if anyone has time, please stop at the sign and begin cleaning out the old plant materials ahead of time. She is willing to join you if you give her a call. Also call if you have any questions about specifically what other maintenance could be done. Bring gloves and a trowel. Refreshments at Tessman’s to follow.

Kevin Schoessow from Spooner and Dr. Susan Mohr of the Wisconsin Master Gardener Program will be in Siren at the Senior Center on May 17 at 6:30 PM. Dr. Mohr will be presenting “Growing Salads/Container Gardening”. This event counts towards Master Gardener points.

Mary G. has been invited to give a presentation about the Burnett Garden Club to the Grantsburg Christian Women’s Club on May 18. She passed around the final proof for an informational brochure to be printed in time for the CWC and also for the Plant Sale. The Sentinel will print 100 full-color trifold brochures at a cost of $45 + tax. Motion passed.

We agreed to a $25 gift certificate to Wood River Greenhouse/Village Floral to be given to Mark & Pam Johnson in appreciation for the use of Mark Johnson’s classroom this school year as our meeting site.

A reminder was announced for Janet’s Open House (Janet’s Perennials) this coming weekend 10-6.

Guest Speaker: Carrie Byers and sister Theresa Halls set up workstations for us to craft some fabulous twig trellises! Refreshments were provided by Theresa and Molly and we also created 1 additional trellis as an appreciation gift for club member Wanda Biorn who cleans up after us when we meet at the High School.

Our next scheduled meeting is Thursday, June 10 at 6PM at Mary Griesbach’s home for hypertufa leaf/stepping stone workshop led by Pam Davies and Gaye Gunderson. Presentation on Grow You Own Salad, May 17

UW-Extension and the North County Master Gardener Volunteer association invites the public to attend a community presentation on “Growing You Own Salad”, on Monday May 17 at the Siren Senior Center from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm. Dr. Susan Rice Mahr, Wisconsin State Master Gardener Program Coordinator will explain the many benefits of growing your own vegetables and explain just how easy it can be. Special emphasis will be on raised bed and container gardening. A limited amount of free seeds will also be available. There is no cost and the event is open to the public.

Mary G. has been invited to give a presentation about the Burnett Garden Club to the Grantsburg Christian Women’s Club in May. She and Kris H. realized that the Club does not have any informational flyers for events such as this, or for any promotions or membership sign-ups. Mary has been developing a tri-fold brochure (with help from Kris!) and looked into costs. Becky T. made a motion, seconded by Alma, to have 100 full-color trifold brochures printed in time for Mary’s presentation to CWC at a cost of $45 + tax. Motion passed. Tim T. will help Mary put the flyer into .pdf format for printing, and extras left over after CWC will be handed out at the plant sale and made available at other locations in town.

Guest Speaker: We enjoyed a fabulous continental breakfast in the gazebo at the greenhouse, thanks to Linnea and Gaye. Dean Faulhaber joined us and led us on a tour of the facilities, sharing his excitement about what’s new in annuals, perennials and other plants and items of gardening interest. It was a beautiful morning and everyone was very enthused. We all went away with our filled with many new ideas & inspirations. Reminder that Wood River Greenhouse officially opens Wednesday, April 21!

Our next scheduled meeting is Thursday, May 6 at 6PM at Kris Henning’s home for potting up plants for the plant sale. Our next official meeting is Thursday, May 13 at 7PM at the High School, location yet to be determined. Refreshments will be provided by Theresa Halls & Molly Byers.

Mary had a handout for all of us detailing the needs for pots and labels and details for the pre-sale potting party at Kris Henning’s home on Thursday, May 6 at 6PM. This handout will also be distributed electronically for those not in attendance.

Guest Speaker: Mary Griesbach led us in a discussion of Vegetable Gardening Strategies for the upcoming growing season, and focused mainly on creative space uses, soil, watering and mulching, a few growing tips and pest control. In addition, she brought our attention to the availability of the North Country Gardeners newsletter, available free from the Spooner Ag. Research Station. Contact them at 800-528-1914 to ask to be added to the mailing list. In this most recent issue, our own Alma Karels was cited for a milestone achievement of 150 volunteer hours as a Master Gardener! Congratulations, Alma! Keep up the great work!

Alma and Cynthia thoughtfully prepared a lovely plate of fresh vegetables in a fabulous presentation for our refreshments.

Our next scheduled meeting is Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 10\am at the Wood River Garden Store. Please NOTE the CHANGE in time and venue! Owner Dean Faulhaber will give us a personal tour of the facilities and present what’s new for 2010 for annuals and perennials. Refreshments will be provided by Gaye Gunderson & Linnea Seume.

Start Planning for the Spring Plant Sale

As you know, our Annual Plant Sale is Saturday, June 5th, from 8:00 AM until noon in front of the Espresso Cabin in Grantsburg. Since this is our main fund raiser we are hoping that everyone will be able to help in some small way.

First, there will be a pre-sale potting party at Kris Henning's home on Thursday May 6th at 6:00 PM. Bring your clumps and we'll pot them. Also, if you have quart or gallon pots, please bring those too. We have labels (but could use more especially the mini-blind slat type) we will attempt to price them right there that evening.

Secondly, if you are bringing plants to the sale, please have them potted and labeled and looking as nice as possible. Set-up begins at 6:00 AM Saturday, June 5th. Also, if you are donating plants but are unable to participate in the sale, this is a great time to drop them off. Any information that you have about your donated plants is appreciated--color, variety, sun/shade, spread, etc, as customers ask. If you are unable to drop them off early that morning, please contact Mary or Kris regarding a pre-sale drop off spot and time.

Mark your calendars!! This is a great time to pick up some great "local" tried and true plants and support our club as well.

MEETING MINUTES
Thursday, February, 2010

The Burnett Garden Club met at 7PM Thursday evening, February 11, 2010 at the Grantsburg High School. Present were the following members: Janet Byers, Lucille Danielson, Pam Davies, Mary Griesbach, Gaye Gunderson, Theresa Halls, Kris Henning, Linnea Seume, Becky Tessman and Tim Tessman. Also in attendance was our speaker Becky Dickinson.

Secretary’s Report: Kris H. stated the secretary’s report from January 2010’s meeting was posted on our website. One correction was the inadvertent omission of new member Sue Auguston – sorry, Sue! Welcome to the Club!

Treasurer’s Report: Becky Tessman reported a current balance of $1253.61.

Old Business: Kris updated us on the plan for the June 13 (yes, it’s a Sunday this year) carpool field trip. Kris would like to arrange for us to begin at Venero Gardens in Excelsior, and also try to include Lake Harriett Gardens, possibly other sites as well as Anderson Iris Gardens. Stay tuned for more details and note it on your calendars now!

Plant Sale planning will be resumed next meeting when chair Mary Charmoli will be in attendance.

New Business: Janet brought copies of numerous flyers for upcoming Master Gardener events in our surrounding area. Be sure note the correction about locations in your yearbook or check the website. The observation was made that all weekends in the month of March have gardening events scheduled: Sat., Mar. 6 = Isanti, MN

Sat., Mar. 13 = Chisago County MG’s new location in Center City

Guest Speaker: We welcomed Becky Dickinson from Cushing as our guest speaker for the evening. Becky had been a member of the Burnett Garden Club years ago. She shared nice handouts with us about growing apple trees, and her personal experiences with 150 of them! Yummy apple crisp, cheeses & warm drinks provided by Pam Davies & Mary Griesbach followed.

I discovered how fun it is to record video on my little camera

I have a little digital camera that evidently records video! I guess I knew it did but I had never done it and didn't want to take the time to learn how. I found out how by accident while touring a boardwalk through the Corkscrew Sanctuary in Collins County Florida, near Naples. The little dial on top of my camera got turned while in my purse so when I went to take a picture it recorded video! What fun. I played around with it but have not gotten my technique down yet. This bit of video is 30 megabytes and was fairly easy to upload to the blog so I thought I'd give it a try. It moves a bit fast.

I love to visit boardwalks when I travel so if anyone knows of any, please let me know. Thanks

MEETING MINUTES
Thursday, January 14, 2010

The Burnett Garden Club met at 7PM Thursday evening, January 14, 2010 at the Crex Meadows Wildlife Education Center. Present were the following members: Molly Byers, Kathi Gajewski, Ron Gajewski, Mary Griesbach, Gaye Gunderson, Theresa Halls, Kris Henning, Alma Karels, Linnea Seume, Rick Seume, Becky Tessman and Mary Ann White. Also present were 2 unidentified guests and our 2 speakers: Kim Dauer and Alan Roelfs.

Secretary’s Report: Kris H. stated the secretary’s report from November 2009’s meeting was posted on our website. Mary Griesbach mentioned there were no minutes from our last gathering, as it was our annual Christmas party.

Treasurer’s Report: Becky Tessman reported a beginning balance of $1300.43.

Old Business: Kris reviewed our summer events for the months of June, July and August. All scheduled events can be viewed on the website and are listed in our membership books. One item for modification is the June 13 carpool Iris and Nursery tour in the Cities. Kris is proposing starting in the Minnetonka area for new sites.

Plant Sale planning will be resumed next meeting when chair Mary Charmoli will be in attendance.

New Business: Becky shared new information about a “Spring Fling” Seminar on March 13 at Lake Elmo HS and brought flyers with more details. The observation was made that all weekends in the month of March have gardening events scheduled.

Kim Dauer (Natural Resources Educator) and Alan Roelfs (Ph.D. Plant Pathology, retired) gave a powerpoint presentation on the use of Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide in identifying native plants. Other resources of note include the herbarium website at UW-SP: wisplant.uwsp.edu, the plant list on Crex’s website: www.crexmeadows.org and Crex’s book: Roadside Flowers of Glacial Lake Grantsburg. Yummy refreshments provided by Kris Henning followed. Many comments were heard about what a valuable gem we have in the wildlife areas in our county and the excellent staff and facilities available!

Our next scheduled meeting is Thursday, February 11, 2010. Becky Dickinson from Cushing will be sharing her expertise on culture of apple trees. Refreshments will be provided by Mary Griesbach and Pam Davies. We will resume our normal meeting place at the High School.

January 2010 Meeting, January 14 at Crex Meadows

Don't miss our exciting January 14 meeting: a presentation of Wildflowers of Crex Meadows by Alan & Kim at Crex. Kim is an educator and Alan is a member of the Friends of Crex and a Ph.D in Plant Biology. They will give a PowerPoint presentation in the auditorium.

The meeting will be held at the Crex Meadows at 7PM. Doors will be open at 6PM to allow attendees to visit the exhibits and gift shop.

Directions: From State Hwy 70 go north at the Grantsburg stoplight. Turn left at W Olson Dr then right at Oak Street. Oak Street deadends at Benson so turn right at Benson then go left on County Road F then a right on County Road D. The Crex Meadows visitor's center is on the left nestled in the woods. June 2, 2011 5:30 pm at the Grantsburg sign on Hwy 70, Annual Sign Planting. Bring gloves and shovels and any other cultivating tools you like. We will clean out the beds and plant annuals along the boarder. Refreshments to follow.

June 4, 2011 6:30 am Saturday in front of the Espresso Cabin. This is our annual plant sale (8 am to noon). Rain or shine. Dress for the weather. We will be setting up, selling and tearing down. Sign up for shift if you can't stay all day.

June 16, 2011 Garden jaunt to Rush Cityto see Wanda Bjorn's garden as well as another private garden (possibly). We will alos make a stop at Melon Vine Farm. Dessert at Grant House in Rush City (if you haven't been to the Grant House, this will be a treat!) 5:30 pm carpool from the High School.

July 14, 2011 Community Garden Tour--Schedule of gardens to be toured will be posted later this year. 5:30 carpool from the Grantsburg High School. Refreshments at the last garden of the evening will be provided by Becky T., Nori k., Mary G

August 11, 2011 Summer Potluck and Container/bouquet Contest. 1 prize-bouquets, 2 prizes for container gardens. 1 entry per category per member. 5:30 pm at Seume's cabin on Wood Lake. Club provides meat and paper products.

August 14, 2011 Munsinger Gardens tour, St. Cloud, MN. 7:30 am Carpool from Grantsburg High School. BYO brown bag lunch, coolers provided Possible stop at a nursery on return trip.
