Three members, Becky, Tim and Pam, met at the Grantsburg sign on Thursday, April 26 at 5:30 to clean up the beds. It took us only a little over an hour to get everything spruced up and ready for next months planting.
We will be planting the sign on Thursday, May 31st at 5:30 pm.
The Annual Potting Party (in preparation for the Annual Plant Sale) will be held at May 3, 6:00 PM, at Kris Henning's house on Spirit Lake. We will be potting up our donated plants to give them a month to look beautiful so they will be irresistible to Big Gust Days shoppers!! Bring your clumps and we will pot them up together. If you can't make it, donate plants prior to the party at Kris's or at Pam's. If you have to be a little late, not a problem. Come anyway. It is fun and goes really fast with lots of worker!!
Directions to Kris' on Spirit lake. If you are coming from Grantsburg, take a right from 70 onto Little Wood Lake Road after Alpha. Follow that until it becomes Spirit Lake Road. Follow that to the right around the lake until you see Kris' day-lily garden on the right and the farm house up above where you will probably see lots of vehicles parked.
Hope to see you all there!

Board met Thursday April 12 at Pam's
The board met to review the books for 2009, 2010 and 2011 and to cover a number of other agenda points. (We accomplished all of this in one hour!! Yippee!!)
Present were Pam (Pres), Kris (VP), Mary G. (Treasurer), Becky T. (Sign Committee chair) and member-at-large Tim T (non-voting). We ate popcorn and grape twizzlers and after the meeting some of us drank a little wine!!
We approved the review of the the books in lieu of an extra $70.00 that showed up in 2011. Pam and Mary will recalculate and find the error. (Moved by Kris, seconded by Mary, Becky abstained, 3 ayes, 0 nays)
We pre-approved spending $50.00 on Chamber membership if approved by the club (moved by Becky, seconded by Kris, 4 ayes, 0 nays). This will be presented to the club as old business in the next meeting.
To help in planning expenditures for the year we reviewed and approved a Spending Plan for 2012 as a planning tool which will be presented at the next meeting. We can make adjustments as the club deems necessary (moved by Becky, seconded by Kris, 4 ayes, 0 nays).
The board looked at a proposal form that will be presented to the club as a planning tool and posted to the blog as a club document for reference as needed. We will tweak this form as the club deems necessary to make it easy for members to present ideas to the club for events, projects, workshops, etc. See below for proposals submitted to the board by Pam for the Scholarship Program and Chamber Membership.

Proposal Form
(Jot these answers on a piece of paper or send in an email. It is not necessary to print the form.)
Proposal: Master Gardener Scholarship Program -- I propose the Garden Club create a scholarship (tuition reimbursement) for members who want to take the Master Gardener course through Wisconsin Extension.
Details:We would do one scholarship per year or $75.00 for the first person to apply. The candidate would have to complete the course and fulfill the requirements to become a master gardener. This would take about one year to complete. If requirements are not met, the next applicant to apply for that year who did complete the course and requirements would get the reimbursement of $75.00. This is a partial reimbursement at the fee for the Master Gardener Program is about $150.00.
How much will it cost: We could offer $75.00 a year payable once requirements are met which would mean payment would be made the next year.
Who is submitting this proposal: Pam Davies makes this proposal. The Garden club board has approved the expenditure contingent on the membership agreeing.

We discussed that the speaker honoraria should be gas cards for all speakers in a greeting card (expect speakers who charge a fee, and master gardeners who can not receive payment) $20.00 ($25.00 if they are coming from farther away). These should be extended to members who make presentations or conduct workshops. In the past, some members have not received honoraria for their presentations. This should not happen in the future. The treasurer will be in charge of purchasing these cards and presenting them in a greeting card to the presenter.
Reimbursement of expenses for speakers and workshops--members need to know that if they are going to do workshops or presentations, the club will reimburse materials expenses. Presenters should let the club know estimated expenses so that we are aware if expenses are excessive and may need participants to contribute individually to defray some of the cost.

Optional question:
How does this fulfill our mission (The purpose of this Club shall be to stimulate the knowledge and love of indoor and outdoor gardening, to encourage civic planting and beautification, to help people of all ages learn the satisfaction of gardening and other horticultural pursuits, and to enjoy the gardens and friendships while sharing knowledge among our members.):
This would stimulate the knowledge of outdoor gardening and would be a part of our mission to share knowledge among our members as the master gardener would be bringing knowledge to the club and to the community.

This would help us reach out to the community to let them know we exist and the speakers and workshops we have through the Newsletter and the website where we would have ads. We would also participate in selected events that would give us exposure as the club deems fit. We could coordinate community beautification with other Chamber members.
