Meeting Minutes: December 2018, our last Burnett Garden Club Meeting

Kris called the meeting to order at 7:35 on December 13

Election of officers was the only agenda item. Since there were no members willing to step up to the positions of President and Vice President, Kris proposed that we dissolve the club. Other options were discussed.

A motion was made by Pam, amended by Charlene and seconded by Mary C that we set February 1, 2019 as the date of dissolution of the club as the board still has to meet to decide how to disburse funds. The motion carried.

The board will meet sometime in January. They are Kris, Mary C, Linnea, Charlene and Pam. Members are welcome. Mary C proposed meeting at her house where she would serve a meal. The date TBD and will be posted on the blog.

The club thought that funds should go toward beautification efforts, possibly a bench and planter boxes at the Grantsburg sign or an escrow account for flowers to be used by the Village. If you have ideas on how the funds should be disbursed, please send them to Kris or Pam or bring them to the board meeting. If you would like your dues returned to you for 2019, please let Kris, Pam or Charlene know.

Kris will talk to the village to let them know we will no longer be planting the sign garden.

Pam and Sandy will take care of taking the holiday display down.

This has been a very sad decision for the club to take.

Correction to minutes: We still need a President for 2019

Correction to minute of the November 2018 meeting. Georgianne did not offer to be co-president with Kris. We still need a candidate for the position of president for 2019. Sorry for the misinformation.

Sock Gnomes project by Mary Griesbach

Each participant should bring 3+ cups of dry, uncooked rice or beans (rice will be cheaper, but beans work really good too), glue gun and glue sticks, scissors, and any assorted ribbons, buttons and other embellishments they think they might like to use. I will provide everything else through my own personal stash and parts purchased. In order for someone to think about what they might like to bring themselves for their gnome, they can go to YouTube and view a couple videos about how to make Sock Gnomes. My method is a blend of what they are going to see in the videos.
Materials cost will be $5.00 for each kit.

Don't worry if you don't have a glue gun, there will be enough to share! If we remember to bring them!!

Election of Officers
We will be electing officers in November.
  • President -- Uses the preset agenda sheet to plan the meeting (6 meetings). Makes sure the presenter will have what they need for the meeting. Makes any decisions for the club not needing a quorum vote of the membership. Presides at the meetings. Kris can not be president due to commitments to Day Lily Association
  • Vice-president -- assists the president when needed and presides at the meeting in the absence of the president. Often the President and Vice-President share the responsibility of the president. Mary C can not be VP this year
  • Secretary -- takes minute of the meeting using the agenda sheet provided by the president. Types up the minutes and emails them to the blog admin (Pam). Linnea?
  • Treasurer -- handles the bank account and check book and makes monthly reports on the clubs income and expenditures and the current balance and any issues that may arise. The treasurer has the thank-you notes and purchases the gas cards to give to presenter. Charlene?
  • Blog Admin/notification (Pam) if anyone is interested in learning how to administrate the blog, Pam would be happy to teach you and work with you on the blog.

We need members to step up to take on these officer positions. You can ask for and will get a helping hand from other members and especially from past officers. To make this club work we need members to rotate into these positions.

Planning Committee for 2019
The new officers and the committee chairs (and any members who wish to participate) will make up the planning committee. The planning committee will meet in November to determine what presentations we will have based on the ideas offered by members. They will decide who to ask to be  presenters, and will make sure all the slots are filled for refreshments, committees, and hosting. Planning committee members will be assigned to do the follow up on these items.

A big, big, big thank you to everyone who participated this year as officers, committee chairs and support; for providing refreshments, growing plants for the sale, offering their gardens and homes as host and for showing up at meetings!! We wouldn't be a club without you!!

Let's make year 31 the best ever!!

Grantsburg Sign Garden Cleanup

Kris and Pam made quick work of the sign cleanup. Kris dug cannas while Pam yanked out petunias and marigolds. So sad to dump all those plants into the scrub but it had to get done. We will be grateful to have a clean palate to work with in the spring.

The sign is now adorned with corn stalks and "funcrows" donated by Grantoberfest. Here are a couple of snaps.

Another bumper crop of bulbs for the plant sale!

Kris and Pam just as dusk was approaching

Grantoberfest 2018--2 new members and lots of interest!!

Grantoberfest was a big success for our club. We came away with two new members, Chris and Rita, and four people who want to be on our email list who we hope will become members down the road. We also got some nice donations!

This year with a big pot of succulents provided by Linnea last year and some additional plants donated by Janet (thank you Linnea and Janet), we had a make-your-own mini, succulent pot which included little fairy garden type decorations. Who new the kids would go wild for this!! With a tub of soil, a trowel and a bunch of small pots of various sizes, the kids flocked in to create their own little garden to take home! A few older folks joined in the fun as well.

We also had a trivia game with questions pertaining to gardening or Grantsburg. Interestingly, most people chose gardening questions! Anyone having trouble answering got lots of clues--no one went away empty handed. We gave away over 50 prizes and made lots of friends for the club!

Thanks to Sandy we got a photo of our booth though just as we were almost done packing up. So busy was the day that getting photos totally slipped my mind. Well, that's a good thing because we had a great Grantoberfest!!

2018 Grantoberfest

A big thank you to Sandy for helping out at the booth including setup and cleanup!! I couldn't have done it without you!

9/19/2018

Grantoberfest!! Saturday!! It's Free!! Don't miss it!!

We will be at Grantoberfest again this year (Sept 22) ! Since we are still celebrating our 30th Anniversary we will be celebrating at Grantoberfest with a lot of free stuff for anyone who comes up to talk to us! We will have fall themed decorations to give away as well as some plants and the opportunity for people to start their own succulent plants and little indoor fairy gardens.

If you have anything to donate, drop it off at Pam's at 216 N Pine Street (just north of the Gburg post office). Any small cute containers would be great. Any little fairy garden stuff, fairy garden sized plants, any pumpkins, gourds, any fun plants that people can take home to plant in their gardens yet this fall (even just in clumps not potted--this will be a hands on gardening experience for folks! I will need donations by Friday late afternoon or by 9:30 at the fairgrounds on Saturday.

Stop by the booth and if you have time, help out with greeting visitors and talking about the garden club.

Hope to see you there!

Meeting Reminder: Thurday, September 13, 6:30 PM GHS room 115

Wow, the summer has flown by! We will be resuming our regular meetings with the September meeting on Thursday,  September 13 at 6:30 PM in room 115 at the Grantburg High School. We will try to make sure the front door of the school is not locked!

At this meeting we will be brainstorming for 2019, so bring your ideas about what programs you would like to see the garden club provide. What workshops would interest you, what gardening challenges do you want to learn about, what garden related topics would you like to explore!

We will be discussing Putting the Garden to Bed with a forum. What are your best kept secrets for preparing your garden for winter and to help with a successful spring? What plants do you winter over indoors? What about bulbs?

September is also our traditional seed and plant exchange. Bring divided plants and collected seeds to share. Let us know what conditions these plants need for success. This is a great time to get last minute plants and seeds to get into the ground for blooms next year!!

Refreshments will be provided by Linnea and Rhonda

Hope to see you all there!!

Another Great Garden Club Showing at the Grantsburg Ag Fair!

Congratulations to all the garden club winners at the fair. Here are some pictures of the entries. Please forgive the out of focus snaps and any entries I missed. Let me know if I have labeled anything wrongly. There were lots of beautiful wheelbarrow entries but they were not labeled.

Please note, entries were brought in on Wednesday so some are a little past their prime, some day lilies no longer had blooms so are not shown.

The fair ground planters also looked great. Thanks Ruthie for coordinating that effort. Pictures are included below.
