Last meeting before summer activities commence

The April meeting was our last before our summer of fun begins! Start digging up those perennials for potting up on May 4 at Kris' annual potting party in preparation for our annual plant sale! Then get ready for some garden cleanup on May 11 and planting the Grantsburg sign garden on June 1. The Big Gust Days plant sale will be June 3.

Mary C gave us a great presentation on orchid culture. She has become a near fanatic for these beautiful plants in a year and a half, and has learned and shared with us her knowledge and experience as an aficionado. Most are relatively easy to grow and seem to thrive on benign neglect so long as they have the right growing medium, a large enough but not too large container, indirect sunlight and are not over watered. That said, Mary had some very nice specimens to show us and a thorough presentation with a very useful handout.

Thank you Mary for a great presentation and thanks to Kris and Ruth for sumptuous refreshments!

She talked about 9 different varieties of orchids—species and common name.  She gave general care tips for growing orchids—Buy plants in bloom, consider your growing conditions—Orchids need
temperatures greater than 65 degrees, humidity, light, but no direct sunlight, plenty of room to grow,  and  they can’t sit in water. Orchids prefer to grow in small pots, NEVER pot in potting soil.  She included a
2 page handout. Mary assured us that they are affordable, and can be raised in NW Wisconsin , even without a green thumb.

REFRESHMENTS: Kris and Ruth brought goodies. Thanks

Meeting Reminder, Thursday, April 13, 6:30 PM, Room 114 GHS

Regular Meeting Thursday, April 13, 6:30 PM at Room 114 Grantsburg High School.

Wow with this great weather I know I'm having a hard time leaving the garden alone to thaw. Have to occupy myself with my cuttings and seedlings in the house for a while yet!

Our next meeting of the Garden Club is coming up next week. This will be our last "regular meeting." We will have the potting party at Kris' in May and will take care of any club business at that gathering rather than having an actual May meeting. Then we have community gardens to tend to of course we have our summer activities and events including the plant sale the first weekend in June.

So, be sure to attend the April meeting for updates on our whole summer of activities!

The April meeting will feature Mary C on "Orchids." Sure to be a great program!

Refreshment will provided by Kris and Ruth

Hope to see you all there!
