Crazy/Jumping worms invading Wisconsin, T-shirts and our next garden club activity

Now that regular meetings are over, our season of gardening activities begins!! Our next garden club activity:

May 28, Thursday 5:30 PM Sign Planting, meet at Grantsburg Sign on HWY 70
We will clean up the beds and plant annuals (usually Zinnea and maybe some marigolds) around the edges of the sign garden on HWY 70 and Memory Lake Flagpole garden for seasonal color.
Dress for digging and bring your favorite gardening tools!

We might dig up some plants for the plant sale and/or the Library gardens while we are at it. I will bring some pots to put them in.

Enjoy a burger at Dreamers on the club for anyone wishing to do so afterward!! We should be done at the sign garden by 6:30 and heading over to Dreamers!

You can pick up your Tshirts at the sign or at Dreamers as I will bring them along with me. $10.00 each, make checks to Burnett Garden Club. Cash works too!!  Or you can pick them up at my house.

Crazy/Jumping worms?? What are they? No not the worms in Mexican jumping beans, these are a new invasive species that has made its way to Burnett County not far from Grantsburg. They eat roots and gum up your soil with their castings render your soil unable to support plant life. They have no known enemies to keep them is check so they are multiplying rapidly.

Here is a picture:

They thrash around crazily when handled.

Read about this species and check out the video news story with the link below.  Keep your eyes out for them. If you find any report them to the DNR or the UW Extension Service Spooner Ag Station (715) 635-3735 right away.
